What Is Chiropractic Care?

Brooklyn Chiropractic Care provides chiropractic treatment for back pain, neck pain, sciatica, and disc problems at our Greenpoint clinic. Dr. Priyank Patel offers same-day appointments for new patients. Call (347) 625-1246 or book online.

Chiropractic care is the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, with a focus on the spine. The core idea is straightforward: when your spine moves the way it should, your nervous system functions better. When it doesn’t, you feel it — in your back, your neck, your legs, and sometimes places you wouldn’t expect.

With over 15 years of experience, Dr. Patel uses spinal adjustments, soft tissue treatment, and corrective exercise to restore proper movement and address what’s actually causing your pain. Not just what hurts right now.

In our Greenpoint clinic, we frequently see patients who’ve tried everything else first. Pain medication. Injections. Waiting it out. Many of them wish they hadn’t waited so long.

Chiropractic care in Brooklyn doesn’t have to be the last resort.

What Conditions Does Chiropractic Care Treat?

It’s not just back pain. Here’s what Dr. Patel treats most at our Brooklyn clinic.

Back Pain

Whether it’s a recent flare-up or something you’ve lived with for years, back pain treatment through chiropractic targets the mechanical cause, not just the ache. Muscle strain, disc problems, and joint restriction all respond differently, and Dr. Patel treats each one accordingly.

Neck Pain & Headaches

Most tension headaches start in the neck, not the head. Restricted joints in the upper cervical spine create referred pain that travels forward into the skull. Neck pain and headache treatment addresses the source, not just the symptom.

Sciatica

That burning, shooting pain down your leg isn’t a muscle problem. It’s nerve compression, usually from a disc pressing on the sciatic nerve. Sciatica treatment with flexion-distraction reduces that pressure without surgery.

Disc Herniation

A bulging or herniated disc doesn’t mean surgery is your only option. Flexion-distraction decompression works by creating negative pressure inside the disc, which draws herniated material away from the nerve.

Sports & Overuse Injuries

Joint sprains, muscle imbalances, and repetitive stress injuries respond well to chiropractic care. Dr. Patel works with patients from desk workers to competitive athletes. The goal is always the same: restore proper movement and prevent re-injury.

Auto & Work Injuries

Whiplash and soft tissue trauma need early treatment. Waiting for the stiffness to resolve on its own is one of the most common mistakes we see.

Signs You Should See a Chiropractor

Pay attention to these signs:

• Pain that’s been present for more than two weeks and isn’t improving on its own
• Pain that radiates from your neck into your shoulders or arms, or from your lower back down your leg
• Morning stiffness that takes longer than 30 minutes to loosen up
• Headaches that start at the base of your skull and move forward
• Discomfort that gets worse after sitting or standing for an extended period
• Any pain after an auto accident or work injury, even if it feels minor at first

None of these require emergency care. They do require attention.

Most people wait too long. Pain that’s been there for two weeks gets accepted as normal. It isn’t. The longer structural problems go untreated, the more the surrounding muscles compensate, and the more you end up treating the secondary problems instead of the original one.

What the Research Says About Chiropractic Care

Wondering if this actually works? The clinical evidence is clear.

A 2024 review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine analyzed 33 clinical practice guidelines from 2013 to 2024. Of the guidelines covering low back pain, 90% recommended spinal manipulation. For neck pain, it was 100% [1].

A 2023 study in Scientific Reports found that serious adverse events from spinal manipulative therapy occurred in fewer than 1 per 100,000 treatment sessions [2]. That’s an extremely low risk profile.

For context, 11% of American adults used chiropractic care in 2022. That’s up from 4% in 1980. The evidence base has grown, and so has the adoption.

Dr. Patel stays current with the research. He uses techniques backed by clinical guidelines. And if your condition isn’t a good fit for chiropractic, he’ll tell you directly and refer you to someone who can help.

Your First Visit at Brooklyn Chiropractic Care

Here’s exactly what to expect.

Your first appointment takes about 45-60 minutes. Dr. Patel starts with a conversation, not a rushed intake form. He wants to understand your problem the way you’d describe it to someone who’s going to fix it.

From there, a physical and orthopedic exam. If X-rays would change how he treats you, he takes them in-house. If they wouldn’t change anything, he won’t order them just to order them.

Most patients get their first adjustment the same day. You’ll leave with a clear picture of what’s happening, a realistic treatment plan, and an honest answer to the question everyone has: “How long is this going to take?”

Same-day appointments are available. Call (347) 625-1246 or book online.

Our Process

Your Examination

Your first appointment begins with a thorough history and physical exam. Dr. Patel checks spinal alignment, joint mobility, orthopedic tests, and neurological function. The exam drives the treatment plan. He won’t start adjusting before he knows what’s actually happening in your spine.

Spinal Adjustments

A specific, controlled force applied to a restricted joint restores normal movement and reduces nerve pressure. The technique varies based on your findings, your comfort level, and what your body can tolerate. The pop you sometimes hear is just gas releasing from the joint. It’s harmless.

Soft Tissue & Decompression

For disc-related pain, Dr. Patel uses flexion-distraction, a gentle rhythmic motion that creates negative pressure inside the disc and draws it away from the nerve. For tight musculature, soft tissue work breaks the guarding cycle that keeps pain returning long after the original injury heals.

Home Care & Rehab

Adjustments fix the problem. The exercises you build around it keep it fixed. Dr. Patel introduces specific home exercises at the right point in your care, not a generic printout but movements matched to what your spine actually needs at that stage of recovery.

When to Skip Chiropractic and Go Straight to the ER

Chiropractic care is the right choice for most spine and musculoskeletal problems. But some symptoms need emergency evaluation.

Go to the ER, not a chiropractic clinic, if you have:

• Sudden loss of bladder or bowel control alongside back pain
• Severe pain following a high-impact trauma (significant fall, serious car accident)
• Weakness in both legs that came on suddenly
• Spinal pain combined with unexplained fever, significant weight loss, or night sweats
• Any chest pain or pain radiating into your jaw or left arm

These aren’t chiropractic presentations. They’re medical emergencies. If something about your symptoms feels unusual or alarming, get it evaluated first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor in Brooklyn? +

No, you don't. Chiropractors are primary contact providers in New York State, which means you can book directly without a referral from your primary care doctor. Most patients walk in or book online without one.

How many visits will I need? +

It depends on what's causing your pain and how long you've had it. Acute injuries often resolve in 6-12 visits over a few weeks. Chronic conditions that have been building for months take longer, particularly when there's been structural adaptation over time. After your exam, Dr. Patel gives you a realistic estimate, not a vague "let's see how it goes."

Is it normal to feel sore after a chiropractic adjustment? +

Yes. Mild soreness in the treated area for 24-48 hours after your first few visits is common. It feels similar to the soreness after starting a new workout. It typically passes quickly. If anything feels wrong rather than just sore, call the office and Dr. Patel will advise you.

Is chiropractic care safe? +

Yes. A 2023 study in Scientific Reports found that serious adverse events from spinal manipulation occurred in fewer than 1 per 100,000 sessions. The most common side effect is mild soreness for 24-48 hours, similar to starting a new workout. Dr. Patel evaluates every patient before treatment and won't adjust you if it isn't appropriate for your condition.

What's the difference between chiropractic care and physical therapy? +

Chiropractors focus on the spine and joints, using adjustments to restore proper movement and reduce nerve pressure. Physical therapists typically focus on strengthening and mobility through exercise. Both have their role. For spinal pain with a structural or joint component, chiropractic care is often the faster path to relief. Dr. Patel also incorporates targeted rehab exercises into care plans when appropriate.
