Neck Pain and Headaches: Why They Keep Coming Back

You have been dealing with this for a while. The stiff neck that shows up every morning. The headache that starts at the base of your skull and wraps around to your temples. You have tried stretching, Advil, maybe even a new pillow. It helps for a day, then it is back.

Here is the thing: neck pain and headaches in Brooklyn are almost always connected. And until someone figures out why your neck keeps locking up, you are just chasing the pain around. That is what we do at Brooklyn Chiropractic Care. We find out what is driving it and fix that.

Neck Pain &; Headaches

Why Your Neck Is Causing Your Headaches

Your neck has seven vertebrae stacked on top of each other, and they are supposed to move freely. When a few of those joints get stuck from sitting all day, sleeping wrong, or years of looking down at your phone, the muscles around them tighten up to compensate. That tension travels upward and triggers headaches.

Doctors call these cervicogenic headaches. They start in the neck and refer pain into the head. They often get mistaken for migraines or tension headaches because the symptoms overlap:

  • Pain on one side of the head or face
  • A headache that gets worse when you turn your neck
  • Stiffness you can not seem to shake
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • A dull ache behind one eye

The difference is the source. If the headache starts in your neck, no amount of migraine medication is going to fix it. You have to address the neck.

Text Neck: The Price of Looking Down All Day

Your head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds when it is sitting on top of your spine where it belongs. Tilt it forward 30 degrees to look at your phone and the load on your cervical spine jumps to around 40 pounds. Tilt it further and it gets worse.

Do that for a few hours a day, every day, and your neck adapts in ways you do not want. The muscles get overworked. The joints stiffen. Your posture rounds forward and stays there.

We see this constantly at our Greenpoint office. The signs are hard to miss:

  • Neck soreness that spikes when you use your phone or laptop
  • Aching across your upper back and shoulders
  • Headaches that show up mid-afternoon during your workday
  • Your head sits forward when you stand, someone has probably pointed this out
  • Sharp, stabbing pain in the neck or down into the arms

How We Actually Treat Neck Pain

A lot of places will crack your neck and send you home. We take a different approach. Dr. Patel looks at the whole picture: which joints are stuck, which muscles are tight, what your posture looks like, and what you do all day that is making it worse.

What happens during treatment

Chiropractic adjustments get the locked-up joints in your neck moving again. When those joints move properly, the muscles can finally relax, and the nerve irritation that causes headaches calms down.

But adjustments alone are not always enough. We also work on:

  • The muscles themselves: Hands-on soft tissue work breaks up the knots and tension that built up over months or years
  • The nerve sensitivity: When your neck has been stuck for a long time, the nerves get hypersensitive. Restoring normal movement helps dial that down
  • Your movement patterns: We figure out what is reinforcing the problem, your desk setup, how you sleep, how you carry your bag, and give you specific fixes

What We Do That Most Clinics Skip

Most neck pain comes from more than one thing going wrong at the same time. A stiff joint here, a tight muscle there, weak stabilizers that are not doing their job. Treating just one piece does not cut it.

Here is what a typical treatment plan looks like:

  1. Targeted adjustments: Dr. Patel uses the Diversified technique to mobilize the specific joints that are stuck. Not a general crack. A precise correction based on your exam
  2. Soft tissue work: We use manual therapy on the tight muscles in your neck, upper back, and shoulders. This is what makes the adjustment hold longer
  3. Exercises you will actually do: We give you 2 to 3 targeted moves to strengthen the muscles that support your neck. Nothing complicated. Just effective
  4. Posture fixes for your real life: We look at your workstation, your phone habits, your sleep position, and give you specific changes that make a difference

Things You Can Do Right Now

You do not need to wait for an appointment to start helping your neck. Try these today:

1. Stop Looking Down at Your Phone

Hold it up at eye level. Yes, your arms will get tired. That is the point. It reminds you to put it down. For desk work, raise your monitor so the top third of the screen is at eye level. Try our desk exercises if you sit all day.

2. Take Breaks Before Your Neck Forces You To

Every 20 to 30 minutes, stand up. Roll your shoulders back. Tuck your chin and hold for 5 seconds. That is it. Set a phone timer if you have to.
